Maybe I was wrong

Growing up, I’ve never really agreed with people’s opinions; I always felt like my own point of view should be the right one, regardless of how wrong I could have been. Even up to, like, a year ago, I still was like this until I met someone who had it worse than me, and I came to the realization of how stupid I was to always force my own personal opinion down people’s throats. Even if after the argument I go and fact-check what that person was saying and I was wrong, I’m never owning up to it. But then I met this person, and I realized how stupid it was not to try and hear other people out. When

I learned that I’ve changed from the person I used to be when the Ayefele, BBO, and Beautiful Nubia sampling saga was trending. I had a conversation with some friends about it and had a back-and-forth. Then I went ahead to read about sampling more. Then I realized, okay, I was wrong and owned up to it. One thing we don’t own up to in this part of the world is our fuck-ups. Take an example of our parents. When they do something wrong, maybe flogging you over something that’s their fault, what do they do? Instead of apologizing, they just hit you with the popular line “Come and carry your food” or “What do you want to eat?” And I think some of us took those toxic traits, and instead of owning up when we are wrong on a particular subject matter or bad behavior, we deflect.

We should try and do better than our parents’ generation. It doesn’t really take anything from you to own up and apologize. “Oh, Chief, you be like you dey correct oo” or “Bro, sorry for the p wey sup” and keep it moving. Writing up to this point, it seems this is a personal vendetta, but that was not the intention when I started writing this piece. I think at this point I need to draw the curtains on this piece, make I no go and project wetin no really go far. Until next time, please, anytime you are wrong on a subject matter or do someone bad, own up to your bad behavior so you don’t look stupid.
